Mushroom Truffles
what time of the year are Truffles found in the pacific northwest (Oregon and Washington)?
Would it be possible to find truffles in Iowa?? We have a lot of oak trees and the weather is similar.
We have a lot of morel Mushrooms in the spring of the year here.
I am a former chef and we used them when I worked in Vancouver B.C Canada, they are more a fall thing but can be purchased from suppliers now as they freeze alot of them, there still as good but a bit spongey.
Morels are a bit different as truffles grow under ground and it take the spores to be present, and not ever area is capable to do this, while alot grow under oak trees the soil and humidity along with the right tempartures and growing condition must be present.
I have been to France and tour the Perigod region and have been to Alba in Italy were the white truffles are available, while Iowa is a nice place I would imagine, it is not the right place for truffle to be grown, unlike other mushrooms they cannot be farmed or transplanted.
