Best Chocolate Factory/shop to visit in Belgium?
Hi,
Thinking of visiting Belgium on the motorbike in October for 4/5 days. Seems to be lots of chocolate shops/cafes and factory tours coming through when I search but would like some recommendations from someone who has actually been to one – preferably a chocoholic!
Thinking of staying in Bruge/Gent as heard great things but also any nice towns anyone could suggest would be great.
~ Go to Carrefour or GB. Look for their own brand chocolate in a cardboard wrapper. They have a red number 1 in a circle on it. The red is milk chocolate, the green is milk with nuts. The third colour (which I never buy) is plain chocolate.
~ Also in the Carrefour or GB you will find a box of chocolate called studentenhaver. Bit like fruit and nut, only posher. The are round slices of chocolate with nuts and raisins on them in a mixture of milk, plain and white.
~ Try nougatini if you the idea of nougat and chocolate in a bar, they sell it at the till or in multipacks in the chocolate section.
Belgian chocolate is Belgian chocolate and believe me the Carrefour/GB is just as tasty and easier on the pocket than the ones you buy in shops in tourist areas. (saying that I don’t like Delhaize own brand chocolate, it don’t taste proper)
For a special treat I go to Leonidas. There is one in Carrefour in Brugge (St-Kruis) and two in Brugge town centre (Steenstraat and Katelijnestraat). You can buy a box of theirs or just a few chocolates in a bag (what I usually do if i am in the neighbourhood).
There is a sweet factory in Brugge called Cathy that also makes chocolate toffees. Looong time ago you could visit the factory but no idea now though, here’s the link. All in Dutch but no harm in asking them in an e-mail. http://www.confiseriekathy.be/nl/darkchocolatecaramel
Good luck and have fun. On a different note. Try frieten met stoofvleessaus in a local chipppie. Unless you are vegetarian ofcourse.
